Flying the Colours: Evan Evans and AFL Finals Signage

The AFL Grand Final is more than just a game — it’s a moment that defines Melbourne and captivates the nation. Each year, footy fever transforms the city into a sea of colour, energy, and community spirit. Behind the roar of the crowd and the drama on the field, there’s another unsung hero: banners and flags that set the stage, elevate the experience, and amplify the culture of footy.

At Evan Evans, we’ve been honoured to play a role in some of the AFL’s most memorable recent moments — from Friday night lights at Marvel Stadium, to a Finals gallery exhibition in Richmond, to regional activations in Darwin.

Why Signage Matters in AFL Finals

When the spotlight is on, signage is more than decoration — it’s an experience amplifier.

  • Atmosphere: Flags and banners unite supporters, turning crowds into living canvases of colour and pride.

  • Visibility: Stadium-scale graphics ensure teams, sponsors, and campaigns are impossible to miss.

  • Broadcast impact: High-contrast prints ensure branding reads clearly on TV and across social media.

  • Community connection: Initiatives like TAC’s Road Safety Round show how signage can carry vital messages far beyond the scoreboard.

Project Highlights

Collingwood’s First Marvel Stadium Race Banners

When Collingwood Football Club needed race banners for Marvel Stadium, the deadline was tight — but our Melbourne production team turned them around in just three working days. Fully custom-printed, Pantone colour matched, and precision joined, these banners wrapped the stadium raceway barriers and created a striking black-and-white presence that electrified Friday night footy.

Bringing the AFL Finals to Life at Lennox St Gallery

In 2023, the AFL Finals Launch Exhibition moved footy culture beyond the MCG. At Lennox St Gallery, we produced large-format prints, poster series, and window decals that transformed the space into a visual celebration of the game. Trophies, photos, and immersive graphics told the story of finals culture, reminding fans that footy is part of Australia’s national identity.

Standing Together for Safer Roads: Road Safety Round

For TAC’s Road Safety Round, Evan Evans created a 9.5 × 11.5 metre banner — a centrepiece for a campaign that united AFL clubs, sponsors, and fans under the message of safer driving. Stretched across Marvel Stadium, this single banner carried enormous symbolic weight, proving that signage can deliver cultural impact as well as sporting atmosphere.

AFL Spirit in the Territory: Gold Coast Suns in Darwin

AFL doesn’t just belong to Melbourne — it belongs to Australia. When the Gold Coast Suns returned to Darwin, Evan Evans delivered bright red street banners lining the city’s streets, bringing footy fever to the Top End. Produced and sewn in-house in Coburg, these banners were designed to withstand the harsh Northern Territory climate while celebrating the AFL’s growing national footprint.

Community Spirit: The 2025 Pink Test

Our commitment to sport also extends to causes that matter. At the 2025 Pink Test, Evan Evans produced large-scale signage in support of the McGrath Foundation — helping transform the SCG into a sea of pink in the fight against breast cancer. While not AFL, it reflects the same values of community, passion, and purpose that drive our sporting partnerships.

Behind the Scenes: How We Deliver Finals-Ready Signage

At Evan Evans, speed and precision are everything. Finals deadlines mean there’s no room for error. Here’s how we do it:

  • Local production: Printed and sewn in Melbourne for fast turnaround.

  • Pantone colour accuracy: Every club colour matched perfectly.

  • Finishing expertise: Reinforced seams, eyelets, and safe fixings designed for stadium compliance.

  • Scale: From handheld flags to banners measuring over 10 metres wide, our team has done it all.

Looking Ahead: The Future of AFL Signage

Signage in AFL is evolving just as fast as the game itself. Clubs and leagues are demanding:

  • Sustainability: Eco fabrics and recyclable paper handwavers are increasingly important.

  • Innovation: QR codes and digital engagement layered into traditional signage.

  • Nationwide reach: With AFL expanding in Darwin, Tasmania, and beyond, signage continues to connect communities across the country.
