To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your flag, please follow these care instructions:

1. Cleaning:
   • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag, avoiding bleach or similar harsh chemicals which can cause fading.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is required, select a gentle cycle with cold water. To protect the flag, place it in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
   • Drying: Air dry the flag by laying it flat or hanging it up. Avoid tumble drying, as the high heat can shrink and damage the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe place to prevent any damage.
3. Folding the Barbados Flag:
   • Lay the flag out on a flat, clean surface to ensure no dirt or debris comes into contact with it.
   • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges precisely to form a long, narrow rectangle.
   • Fold the flag in half widthwise, ensuring the top and bottom edges meet evenly. This will create a smaller, neater rectangle.
   • Starting from one end of the folded rectangle, fold the flag diagonally into a triangle shape. Continue folding in this manner until you reach the end, creating a series of triangular folds.
   • Once the entire flag is folded into a triangular shape, ensure the edges are neatly tucked in to avoid any loose ends or fraying.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags, tears, or abrasions.
   • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely hoisted and free from any obstructions.
   • Flag Exposure: Reduce the flag's exposure to harsh weather by taking it down during severe weather conditions or at night.
5. Repairs:
   • Minor Repairs: Address any wear, tear, or fraying promptly. Replace the flag if necessary and seek professional repair from a seamstress for any significant damage.

Flying the Barbados Flag:

• Raising the Flag:
  • Ensure the flagpole is securely installed and free from any obstructions or damage.
  • Fasten the flag to the halyard or pole using the designated loops or attachments. Make sure it is securely fixed to prevent it from becoming tangled or slipping.
  • Raise the flag briskly to the top of the pole, ensuring it unfurls smoothly and fully. Avoid letting it touch the ground during the process.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • Ensure the flag’s Trident symbol is positioned correctly and is fully visible. The flag should be flown with the blue stripes to the sides and the golden band in the middle.
  • Display the flag at a prominent height, allowing it to be clearly visible from a distance. The flag should be the highest flag if displayed with others.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • Begin by hoisting the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position.
  • Lower the flag to a position halfway down the flagpole. Ensure it is centred in this position, reflecting the somber nature of the occasion.
  • After the period of mourning, raise the flag back to full mast before lowering it for removal.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • Raise the flag briskly to full mast at sunrise, following the flag-raising protocol to mark the beginning of the day.
  • Lower the flag at sunset, ensuring it is brought down with care. The flag should be taken down promptly and stored properly if not displayed overnight.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Refrain from flying the flag during extreme weather conditions such as heavy storms, high winds, or severe rain, as these can damage the flag.
  • If the weather is windy, ensure the flag is properly secured and check for any signs of wear or tear regularly.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • Regularly inspect the flag for any signs of damage, such as fraying or fading. When the flag becomes worn or unserviceable, it is time to retire it.
  • Follow local guidelines for the respectful disposal of the flag. Typically, flags are retired through a ceremonial burning or other respectful means to honour its service.
