When the NFL arrived in Melbourne for its first-ever regular-season game in Australia, the occasion called for something on a truly massive scale.

Evan Evans was proud to produce the giant Australian and American flags displayed on the field at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as part of the pre-game spectacle.

Each flag measured an enormous 34.8 metres × 17.4 metres, creating a combined flag area of more than 1,200 square metres.

A historic sporting moment at the MCG

On Friday 11 September 2026, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams met at the MCG for the first NFL regular-season game ever played in Australia.

The occasion attracted an official crowd of 100,021 spectators, filling one of Australia's most famous sporting venues for a major international event.

Before the action began, the Australian and American flags were unfurled across the MCG turf as part of the pre-game presentation, creating one of the most striking visual moments of the day.

34.8 metres × 17.4 metres — each

These were far from standard-size flags.

At 34.8 metres long and 17.4 metres wide, each flag covered approximately 605 square metres. Together, the two flags represented more than 1,200 square metres of fabric.

Producing flags on this scale requires careful planning, preparation and handling throughout the manufacturing process. The Australian and American flags required a combined 40 hours of care and production from the Evan Evans team.

Every stage becomes more challenging as the scale increases — from managing large sections of printed fabric to joining, finishing, handling and preparing the completed flags for their final presentation.

Proudly made in Melbourne

For the Evan Evans team, there was something particularly special about seeing flags produced here in Melbourne displayed across the turf of the MCG for an international sporting event being watched in Australia and around the world.

Evan Evans has been manufacturing flags and large-format printed products in Australia for generations, and projects like this demonstrate just how far custom flag production can go.

From standard custom flags for businesses, schools and sporting clubs through to one-off oversized flags for major events, our team can work with organisations and event producers to create flags suited to the scale of the occasion.

Flags made for major sporting events

The MCG regularly hosts some of Australia's biggest sporting and cultural occasions, and the arrival of the NFL added another landmark event to its history.

The 2026 Melbourne game brought together American football and one of Australia's most recognisable sporting venues, with the Australian and American flags helping set the scene before more than 100,000 spectators.

Seeing the finished flags stretched across the ground was a proud moment for everyone involved in their production at Evan Evans.
