1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to wash the flag, ensuring the colours remain bright. Avoid using bleach or any harsh chemicals that may cause damage.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging or tearing.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as the high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage or mould.
3. Folding the Christmas Island Flag:
   • Lay the flag flat: Place the flag on a flat surface with the blue triangle featuring the Southern Cross and the green triangle with the golden bosun bird clearly visible.
   • Fold in half lengthwise: Fold the flag horizontally, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Ensure the golden disk and green map of Christmas Island remain visible on the top layer.
   • Fold lengthwise again: Fold the flag once more lengthwise, aligning the edges neatly so that the Southern Cross and bosun bird remain on display.
   • Fold crosswise: Begin folding the flag horizontally in sections, ensuring the golden disk and green map stay centred. Fold until the flag forms a neat, compact rectangle.
   • Final positioning: Adjust the folds to ensure that the golden disk with the green map of Christmas Island is prominently visible on the top surface, symbolising the island’s identity.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp or abrasive surfaces to prevent snags or tears.

• Raising the Flag

On occasions of mourning, the flag should remain at half-mast until the end of the designated period, then raised to full mast before lowering for the day.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
  • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered respectfully at sunset. If the flag is flown at night, ensure it is properly illuminated. Always avoid raising the flag in complete darkness without proper lighting, as it is seen as a sign of neglect.
• Weather Conditions
  • In case of severe weather, such as storms or high winds, the Christmas Island flag should be taken down to prevent damage. Strong winds and rain can cause unnecessary wear and tear, reducing the longevity of the fabric and its vibrant colours.
• Retirement of the Flag
