The Significance of ANZAC Day

Observed annually on 25th April, ANZAC Day is a time of reflection, commemorating the service and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs). The red poppy, a widely recognised symbol of remembrance, represents the resilience and courage of those who have served in Gallipoli and conflicts beyond. This day is marked by dawn services, marches, and moments of silence, fostering a deep sense of unity and respect.

To maintain the flag’s durability and vivid colours, follow these care instructions:

1. Cleaning:

   • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean your flag and preserve its vibrant colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may cause fading or damage.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may shrink or weaken the fabric.

2. Storage:

   • Proper Storage: Completely dry the flag before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry location to prevent moisture buildup and mildew.

3. Folding the ANZAC Flag:

   • Lay the flag flat on a clean, dry surface.
   • Fold it in half lengthwise, ensuring the design remains visible.
   • Fold it in half again, keeping the poppy and soldier imagery aligned.
   • Continue folding in a triangular pattern from the bottom until the flag is neatly compact.
   • Store it in a protective case or clean fabric bag to maintain its condition.

4. Handling:

   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges and rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
   • Secure Installation: Attach the flag properly to its mounting hardware or pole to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
   • Minimise Exposure: While the flag is designed for durability, bringing it down during extreme weather conditions will help extend its lifespan.

5. Repairs:

   • Minor Repairs: If small tears or fraying occur, consider having the flag professionally repaired to restore its integrity.
   • Replacement: For flags showing significant wear or fading, replacing them ensures they remain a dignified symbol of remembrance.

Flying the ANZAC Flag:

• Attach the flag to a sturdy flagpole or display stand.
• Raise it at sunrise and lower it at sunset to observe traditional flag protocols.
• During ANZAC Day ceremonies, fly the flag at half-mast until noon, then raise it to full height as a mark of respect.
• If displaying multiple flags, position the ANZAC flag in a place of prominence.

By following these care instructions, your flag will maintain its striking appearance and durability, serving as a proud and lasting tribute for years to come. Proper care is a reflection of the respect and honour the flag represents.
