product-care
xFor lasting quality and vibrant colours of the flag, please follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Wash the flag with a mild detergent to minimise fading and protect the fabric. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that could compromise the colours.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging and damage.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or damage the material.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage, which can weaken the fabric over time.
- Folding the Lest We Forget Flag:
- Lay the Flag Flat: Begin by laying the Lest We Forget Flag on a flat surface with the design facing upwards. Make sure the flag is smooth, without wrinkles or creases.
- Fold in Half Lengthwise: Fold the flag lengthwise once, ensuring the “Lest We Forget” inscription remains visible on the outside. Carefully align the edges to maintain a neat, even fold.
- Fold in Half Again: Fold the flag lengthwise again, keeping the poppy emblem and text visible on the outer fold. This second fold will narrow the flag, preparing it for the triangular folds.
- Begin Triangular Folds: Starting from the hoist side (the side with the loops), fold the bottom corner of the flag up to form a triangle. Continue folding the triangle across the width of the flag, keeping each fold tight and even.
- Continue Triangular Folds: Repeat the triangular folding process until you reach the end of the flag. Ensure that each triangle fold remains consistent in size and shape for a uniform appearance.
- Tuck in the Final Edge: Once the entire flag has been folded into a compact triangle, tuck any loose edges into the fold to secure the flag. This will create a neat, finished look, ready for storage or display.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects and rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached when displayed, reducing unnecessary strain on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: For prolonged flag life, bring it down during extreme weather or overnight to preserve its quality.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag. You can take the damaged flag to a professional seamstress for repair if needed.
- Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, consider purchasing a new one to maintain its dignity and appearance during important commemorations.
Flying the Lest We Forget Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
When raising the Lest We Forget Flag, it should be done briskly and with purpose, symbolising pride and respect. The flag should ascend to the top of the pole swiftly and securely. Always ensure that it is attached properly, using sturdy clips or loops, to prevent it from becoming loose or tangled. - Displaying the Flag:
The Lest We Forget Flag should be displayed in a prominent and respectful position, whether at home, in public spaces, or during remembrance ceremonies. Ensure that it is not obstructed by other objects, and it should never touch the ground. It is commonly displayed during significant remembrance occasions such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, honouring the fallen. - Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
To fly the Lest We Forget Flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole, then slowly lower it to a position about one-third from the top. This gesture is a sign of mourning and respect for those who served and sacrificed. On remembrance days like Anzac Day, the flag is flown at half-mast until noon, then raised to full mast for the remainder of the day to symbolise the rising of the spirits of the fallen. - Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
The Lest We Forget Flag should ideally be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. The flag should be brought down respectfully and slowly at dusk, and folded properly before being stored. If the flag is to remain flying at night, it should be illuminated, ensuring that it is visible and treated with the same level of respect as during daylight hours. - Weather Conditions:
It is recommended to bring the Lest We Forget Flag down during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, or strong winds. Extreme weather can damage the fabric and degrade the flag's appearance over time. By taking it down during adverse conditions, you can extend its life and preserve its colours and structure. - Retirement of the Flag:
When the Lest We Forget Flag becomes too worn or frayed to display respectfully, it should be retired with dignity. The traditional method for retiring a flag is by burning it in a private, respectful ceremony. If possible, contact local veteran organisations or flag disposal services to ensure that the flag is retired properly, in keeping with its significance.
By following these care guidelines, your Lest We Forget Flag will retain its vibrant colours and serve as a fitting tribute for years to come. Proper care reflects the pride and reverence this flag represents.
