product-care
xFor lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Lest We Forget flag, please follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Always clean flags using a mild detergent to minimise fading. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that could compromise the colours.
- Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep the flag in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
- Folding the Lest We Forget Flag:
- Prepare the Flag: Start by placing the Lest We Forget Flag on a flat surface, ensuring the design is facing upwards. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases for an even fold.
- First Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, making sure the “Lest We Forget” inscription remains visible on the outer side. Align the edges carefully to achieve a tidy fold.
- Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise once more, ensuring the design and text are still visible on the outer layer. This step narrows the flag, setting it up for triangular folds.
- Start the Triangular Folds: From the hoist side (the side with loops or sleeve), take the bottom corner of the flag and fold it upwards to create a triangle. Continue this process, folding the triangle across the width of the flag, making sure each fold is tight and even.
- Proceed with Triangular Folds: Continue folding in this triangular manner until you reach the flag’s end. Keep each triangle fold uniform in size and shape for a consistent appearance.
- Secure the Final Edge: After the flag has been folded into a compact triangle, tuck in any loose edges to secure the folds. This will provide a neat, polished finish, making it ready for storage or display.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during extreme weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and consult a professional seamstress for repairs on the damaged one.
- Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to uphold its appearance during important occasions.
Flying the Lest We Forget Flag:
- Raising the Flag:
When elevating the Lest We Forget Flag, do so with intention and speed to convey pride and respect. The flag should ascend to the top of the pole efficiently and securely. Always ensure it is firmly attached with robust clips or loops to prevent any loosening or tangling. - Displaying the Flag:
The flag should be prominently and respectfully displayed, whether at home, in public areas, or during remembrance ceremonies. Ensure that it is unobstructed by other items and never allowed to touch the ground. This flag is typically shown during important remembrance events like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, honouring those who have fallen. - Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
To position the flag at half-mast, first raise it fully to the top of the flagpole, then gently lower it to about one-third from the top. This act signifies mourning and respect for those who served and sacrificed. On remembrance days such as Anzac Day, the flag is flown at half-mast until noon, after which it is raised to full mast for the remainder of the day, symbolising the upliftment of the spirits of the fallen. - Flag Etiquette at Sunrise and Sunset:
Ideally, the flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. When taking the flag down at dusk, do so respectfully and slowly, then fold it properly before storage. If the flag is to be displayed at night, it should be illuminated to ensure visibility and treated with the same respect as during the day. - Weather Considerations:
It is advisable to take down the flag during severe weather, including heavy rain, storms, or strong winds. Extreme conditions can harm the fabric and degrade the flag’s appearance over time. Removing it during such weather can help preserve its integrity and vibrant colours. - Retiring the Flag:
When the flag becomes too worn or frayed to be displayed honourably, it should be retired with dignity. The traditional method for flag retirement is to burn it in a private and respectful ceremony. If possible, reach out to local veteran organisations or flag disposal services to ensure that the flag is retired appropriately, in accordance with its significance.
By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vibrant colours and remain in excellent condition for years to come. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s about honouring the pride and heritage it represents.
