Designing for the Stage: Evan Evans Signs on for Melbourne Theatre Company’s “Mother Play” Exhibition

Here at Evan Evans, we love any opportunity to support Melbourne’s thriving arts scene—and this latest project was a particularly proud moment for us. 🎭
We were thrilled to produce custom display signage for the Melbourne Theatre Company’s “Mother Play” costume exhibition, celebrating the meticulous craftsmanship of costume designer Christina Smith and the artistry behind each era-inspired outfit.
From Broadway to Melbourne: A Story Worth Sharing
Starring the legendary Sigrid Thornton, Mother Play arrives in Melbourne fresh from a celebrated Broadway run. The production earned four Tony nominations, two Drama Desk Awards, and an Outer Critics Circle Award in 2024. Each of Thornton’s 14 custom-made costumes represents a chapter in her character’s life. Our signage forms part of the immersive experience, helping guide viewers through the timeline of theatrical style and storytelling.

Custom Signage Meets Costume Design
Working alongside the MTC production team, we created sleek, gallery-style signage for the “Designing Through the Decades” exhibit—crafted with clean typographic precision and visual balance to match the exhibition's aesthetic.
It’s another example of how signage can quietly support a bold creative vision without stealing the spotlight.
Now Showing Until August 2
The exhibition and play are now open at Southbank Theatre and run until August 2. Visit @melbtheatreco or their official site for ticketing info.
We’re proud to have contributed to such a powerful and meaningful show.
