The Australian Civil Air Ensign was established in 1935 to represent Australian civil aviation. Its original design featured yellow stars, which were changed to white in 1947 to make the ensign easier to recognise from a distance. The revised design was formally notified in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 4 March 1948.

The ensign has historically been associated with Australian civil aviation authorities, airports, aerodromes and Australian civil aircraft. Its current use is governed by section 19 of the Civil Aviation Act 1988.

The Civil Air Ensign may be flown or displayed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Airservices Australia, on an Australian aircraft engaged in international air navigation, or with CASA’s permission and in accordance with any conditions attached to that permission.

Flag Design & Meaning

The Australian Civil Air Ensign features a light-blue field divided by a dark-blue cross with narrow white borders. The design reflects its historic connection with civil aviation and the sky.

The Union Jack appears in the upper hoist quarter, with the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star in the lower hoist quarter. The five stars of the Southern Cross appear across the remaining sections of the flag, with the smaller five-pointed star positioned on the horizontal arm of the cross.

Displaying the Australian Civil Air Ensign

The Australian Civil Air Ensign represents Australian civil aviation. Its display is restricted under section 19 of the Civil Aviation Act 1988 and must only occur where authorised by the Act or with permission from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

• Before Displaying the Ensign
  • Confirm that your organisation or intended display is authorised under the Civil Aviation Act 1988.
  • If the intended use is not otherwise authorised, obtain permission from CASA before displaying the ensign.
  • Follow any conditions or display instructions included with the permission.
• Raising the Flag
  • Ensure the flagpole is secure and free from obstructions before installation.
  • For Header with Loops finishes, attach the loops securely using suitable clips and a halyard system.
  • For Vertical Sleeve finishes, slide the sleeve carefully over the presentation pole and secure it as required.
  • Raise or position the flag carefully without allowing it to drag along or touch the ground.
• Displaying the Flag Correctly
  • Ensure the Union Jack is positioned in the upper hoist quarter, closest to the top of the flagpole.
  • The large Commonwealth Star should appear in the lower hoist quarter.
  • Display the flag securely and allow sufficient clearance for it to fly freely.
  • Do not allow the flag to contact the ground, nearby walls, trees, rooflines or other obstructions.
