Displaying the Australian Defence Force Ensign
The Australian Defence Force Ensign represents the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force. It should only be displayed with the appropriate permission and in an authorised military, ceremonial, commemorative or heritage setting.

Raising the Flag
- Confirm that the required permission has been obtained before displaying the ensign.
- Ensure the flagpole is secure and free from obstructions before installation.
- For Header with Loops finishes, attach the loops securely using suitable clips and a halyard system.
- For Vertical Sleeve finishes, slide the sleeve carefully over the presentation pole and secure it as required.
- Raise or position the flag carefully without allowing it to drag along or touch the ground.

Displaying the Flag
- Ensure the dark-blue Royal Australian Navy band is positioned at the hoist, closest to the flagpole.
- The red Australian Army band should appear in the centre, with the light-blue Royal Australian Air Force band at the fly end.
- Display the ensign securely and allow sufficient clearance for it to fly freely.
- Do not allow the flag to contact the ground, nearby walls, trees, rooflines or other obstructions.
- When displayed with other flags, follow the order of precedence and protocol provided by the relevant Defence, ceremonial or event authority.

Half-Mast Display
- The Australian Defence Force Ensign should only be flown at half-mast when officially directed or when the appropriate Defence protocol applies.
- Raise the flag fully to the top of the flagpole before lowering it to the prescribed half-mast position.
- Before lowering it completely, raise it to the top of the flagpole once more.

Day and Night Display
- Follow the directions of the relevant Australian Defence Force, ceremonial or event authority regarding raising and lowering times.
- If the flag is displayed overnight, it should be appropriately illuminated.

Weather Conditions
- Avoid displaying the flag during severe weather wherever possible.
- Lower and store the flag during extreme winds, storms or other damaging conditions to help extend its lifespan.
- Allow a wet flag to dry completely before folding or storing it.

Flag Retirement
- When the flag becomes worn beyond repair, remove it from display and dispose of it privately and respectfully.
- Where official military or ceremonial requirements apply, seek guidance from the relevant Defence authority.
