To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your France flag, please adhere to the following care instructions:
Cleaning:
Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent for cleaning the flag to maintain its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and select a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from using a tumble dryer, as high temperatures can cause shrinkage or damage to the material.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it to avoid mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Folding the France Flag:
Select a Clean Area: Choose a flat, clean surface to lay the flag down, ensuring the flag's design faces down to protect its vibrant colours.
Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half along its length, aligning the top edge with the bottom edge to create a slim, elongated shape. Smooth out any creases as you fold.
Create a Triangular Fold: Starting from the hoist side (the left), fold the flag diagonally over itself to form a triangle. Continue this folding process, creating additional triangles until you reach the flag’s end.
Secure the Fold: Tuck the remaining fabric into the folds to keep the flag secure and prevent it from unfolding. Make sure the blue side is visible while the red side remains tucked away.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached and able to move freely while displayed.
Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, consider taking it down during severe weather or at night to minimise exposure to harsh elements.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: If you observe any fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged one professionally repaired by a seamstress.
Replacement: As the flag nears the end of its life, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag ready for important events.
Flying the France Flag:
Raising the Flag:
Start by ensuring the flagpole is stable and free from obstructions.
Using the Header with Loops: Thread the reinforced loops onto the top of the flagpole, making sure they are firmly secured. Then, pull the halyard to lift the flag, ensuring it hangs freely and without obstruction.
Using the Vertical Sleeve: Insert the flag into the sleeve located on the side of the pole, ensuring it is aligned properly. Once positioned, raise the pole, allowing the flag to unfold gracefully as it ascends.
Displaying the Flag:
When displaying the flag either vertically or horizontally, position the blue section on the left for vertical arrangements or at the top for horizontal placements. This ensures the flag's proper display and upholds its national significance
The French flag should be flown from sunrise to sunset, ideally in a visible location where it can be easily seen by the public.
If displaying the flag alongside others, ensure the French flag is at the same height or above them, signifying respect.
When multiple flags are flown, the French flag should be positioned to its own right (the viewer's left).
Half-Mast Protocol:
To display the flag at half-mast, first raise it fully to the top before lowering it to the half-mast position.
The half-mast position is typically about two-thirds down the pole, ensuring visibility while conveying a sense of mourning.
Once the mourning period is over, raise the flag back to the top of the pole before removing it.
Sunrise and Sunset Etiquette:
For outdoor displays, the flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
If the flag is to be displayed at night, it should be properly illuminated in accordance with etiquette guidelines.
If not lit, it's best to take the flag down at dusk to avoid any semblance of disrespect.
Weather Conditions:
The French flag should not be flown in severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, or strong winds, as these can damage the fabric.
If bad weather is expected, consider taking the flag down to protect its condition.
Flags made from sturdy materials can withstand light rain but should still be monitored for potential wear.
Retiring the Flag:
When the flag becomes worn, faded, or irreparably damaged, it should be retired with dignity.
The preferred method of retirement is to burn the flag in a respectful ceremony, ensuring all participants understand its significance.
Always dispose of the flag in a manner that honours its representation of national pride and the respect it commands for the country it represents.
By following these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your Fully Sewn France Flag remains vibrant, durable, and a symbol of pride for years to come. Proper care reflects the respect you have for your heritage and nation.
