For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Bermuda flag, kindly adhere to the following care guidelines:
Cleaning:
Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent to wash the flag to reduce fading, and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Protect the flag by placing it in a mesh laundry bag.
Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it. Do not use a tumble dryer as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture and mildew.
Folding the Bermuda Flag:
Prepare the Flag: Lay the flag out on a clean, flat surface, ensuring it is free of any dirt or debris.
Fold Lengthwise: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the two long edges together. Smooth out any wrinkles to ensure a neat fold.
Fold Again: Fold the flag in half lengthwise once more, aligning the edges carefully. This will create a long, narrow strip of fabric.
Form the Triangular Shape: Starting from one end of the strip, begin folding the flag into a triangular shape. Fold at a 45-degree angle, ensuring that each fold aligns with the previous one, to form a compact triangle.
Continue Folding: Continue folding the triangle inwards, maintaining the triangular shape until the entire flag is neatly folded into a small, manageable triangle.
Finish: Ensure the final folded flag is smooth and tidy.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items and rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
Secure Installation: Ensure that the flag is hoisted properly and is not tangled or touching the ground.
Flag Exposure: Reduce exposure to harsh weather by taking the flag down during extreme conditions or at night.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: For small issues like fraying or tears, replace the flag with a spare and seek professional repairs from a seamstress.
Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, consider replacing it to maintain a fresh and presentable appearance for future occasions.
Flying the Bermuda Flag:
Raising the Flag:
Ensure the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions.
Attach the flag securely to the halyard (the rope used to raise and lower the flag).
Slowly raise the flag, ensuring it is unfurled and not tangled. Secure the halyard to prevent the flag from slipping.
Displaying the Flag:
Position the flag so that it is flying freely and is not touching the ground.
Ensure the flag is fully extended and visible from all angles.
If using multiple flags, ensure that the Bermuda flag is given a position of prominence and is not displayed below other flags.
Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
To fly the flag at half-mast, raise it to the top of the pole first, then lower it to the halfway point.
Ensure the flag remains at this position for the duration of the commemoration or event.
To return the flag to full mast, raise it back to the top before lowering it again to its normal position.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
Raise the flag at sunrise, ensuring it is fully hoisted by the time the sun rises.
Lower the flag at sunset, making sure it is taken down completely before dark.
During periods of low light, consider using lighting to keep the flag visible if it is to be displayed after sunset.
Weather Conditions:
Avoid flying the flag in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, high winds, or storms to prevent damage.
If severe weather is forecasted, take the flag down and store it in a dry, secure location.
During windy conditions, ensure the flag is properly secured to prevent it from becoming damaged or torn.
Retirement of the Flag:
When the flag is worn, frayed, or no longer suitable for display, retire it respectfully.
Consider a ceremonial retirement by burning or other respectful methods.
Replace the old flag with a new one to ensure that your display remains dignified and respectful.
By following these care instructions, you can maintain the excellent condition of your flag, preserving its vibrant colours and durability over time. Your flag represents your pride in Bermuda and reflects the respect you have for your heritage.
