1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag to prevent colour fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snags.
   • Air Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it up. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause shrinkage or damage.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent damage.
3. Folding the Burundi Flag:
   • Prepare the Flag: Lay the flag out flat on a clean, smooth surface with the design facing upwards.
   • Initial Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise in half, aligning the top edge with the bottom edge to form a long, narrow strip.
   • Second Fold: Fold the flag lengthwise once more, bringing the left edge over to meet the right edge, creating a narrower strip.
   • Final Fold: Starting from one end, carefully roll the flag tightly towards the opposite end, ensuring the design remains aligned and visible.
   • Secure the Fold: If needed, secure the rolled flag with a soft tie or band to keep it in place and prevent it from unfolding.
4. Handling:

• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • Raising to Half-Mast: First, raise the flag to the top of the flagpole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point. This signifies the flag’s temporary position at half-mast.
  • Duration: The flag should remain at half-mast for the duration of the mourning period or as required by protocol.
  • Hoisting to Full Mast: Once the period ends, raise the flag back to the top of the flagpole before lowering it for removal.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • Sunrise: The flag should be raised to the top of the pole at sunrise to signify the start of the day.
  • Sunset: Lower the flag at sunset to signify the end of the day. Avoid leaving the flag flying overnight unless it is illuminated by a spotlight.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Wind: In high winds, consider lowering the flag or securing it to prevent damage. Strong gusts can cause wear and tear.
  • Rain and Storm: It is advisable to take the flag down during heavy rain or storm to prevent water damage and accumulation. Allow it to dry thoroughly before reflying.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • Condition Check: If the flag becomes tattered, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired.
  • Respectful Disposal: Retire the flag with dignity by either burning it in a respectful manner or contacting a local organisation that handles flag retirements. Ensure the flag’s disposal is in line with established protocols and shows respect for the national symbol.
