To maintain the long-lasting quality and vibrant colours of your Guernsey flag, please adhere to these care instructions:
Cleaning:
Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent when washing the flag to reduce the risk of fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals that could harm the colours.
Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, opt for a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging during the wash.
Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer, as high heat can cause the fabric to shrink or become damaged.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to prevent moisture damage. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe location.
Folding the Guernsey Flag:
Begin by holding the flag horizontally, ensuring that the gold and red cross are facing upward.
Fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, ensuring the cross remains visible and aligned at the centre.
Smooth out any creases, and then fold the flag lengthwise again, this time bringing the bottom edge to meet the top edge once more. The cross should still be visible, with the design aligned symmetrically.
Next, fold the flag into thirds horizontally, bringing the left side toward the centre first, then folding the right side over the top. This will leave the flag in a neat rectangle with the cross still showing prominently.
Make any additional adjustments to ensure that the flag is tightly folded and free of wrinkles, ready for storage or display.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from any sharp or rough surfaces to avoid snags or tears.
Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened when displayed to prevent undue strain on the fabric.
Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to preserve its appearance and durability.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: If there are small tears or frayed edges, take the flag to a professional for repair, and consider replacing it temporarily.
Replacement: When the flag shows significant signs of wear, consider purchasing a new one to maintain its fresh, vibrant appearance during key events.
Flying the Guernsey Flag:
Raising the Flag:
Begin by ensuring the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions that might hinder the flag's movement.
Using the Header with Loops: For flags with a header and loops, slide the loops onto the halyard or rope, ensuring they are evenly spaced. When raised, the loops will provide secure support and stability.
Using the Vertical Sleeve: If your flag features a vertical sleeve, simply slide the sleeve down over the flagpole until it rests comfortably at the top. Ensure the flag is properly aligned and then raise it smoothly, allowing the flag to unfurl as it ascends.
Displaying the Flag:
When displaying the Guernsey Flag, ensure it is hung vertically, with the cross positioned outwards. This placement shows respect for the flag’s design and symbolism.
Position the Guernsey Flag in a prominent location.
Ensure the flag is fully unfurled and not touching the ground or any other surfaces, as this is considered disrespectful.
Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
To fly the Guernsey Flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position. This signifies mourning and respect.
The half-mast position is generally considered to be halfway down the flagpole, although local customs may vary. Check specific guidelines if unsure.
Ensure the flag remains securely fastened at this height and that it is properly displayed during the mourning period.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
When raising the Guernsey Flag at sunrise, it should be hoisted briskly to the top of the flagpole, signalling the start of the day.
At sunset, the flag should be lowered slowly and respectfully, taking care to avoid any undue strain on the fabric.
If the flag is to be left outside overnight, consider taking it down unless it is specifically designed for 24-hour display.
Weather Conditions:
Be mindful of weather conditions; if severe weather is anticipated, it’s advisable to take the flag down to prevent damage.
In windy conditions, consider using a flag with reinforced seams to withstand the elements. Always check the flag for wear and tear before displaying it.
Remove the flag during heavy rain, snow, or storms to maintain its condition and prolong its life.
Retirement of the Flag:
When it is time to retire a worn or damaged Guernsey Flag, do so respectfully. The flag should never be thrown away or discarded carelessly.
A proper retirement involves burning the flag in a dignified ceremony or taking it to a local flag retirement programme, where it will be treated with respect.
By following these guidelines, you’ll help your flag maintain its vibrant colours and pristine condition for many years to come. Caring for your flag is not just about preservation; it’s a way to respect the pride and heritage it symbolises.
