1. Cleaning
   • Gentle Washing: Wash with a mild detergent to help preserve the fabric and colours. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is required, use a gentle cycle with cold water and place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag.
   • Air Dry: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may damage the fabric.
2. Storage
   • Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it in a cool, dry location away from moisture.
3. Folding the Japan Flag
   • Lay the flag flat on a clean surface with the red disc facing upwards.
   • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges carefully.
   • Fold it in half lengthwise once more to form a long rectangle.
   • Starting at one end, fold the flag into neat triangles until you reach the opposite end.
   • Tuck any remaining fabric into the final fold to keep the flag secure.
4. Handling
   • Avoid contact with sharp objects and rough surfaces.
   • Ensure the flag is securely attached before display.
   • For longer service life, remove the flag during extreme weather or overnight where practical.
5. Repairs
   • Repair minor tears or loose stitching promptly to help extend the flag's lifespan.

Flying the Japan Flag

• Raising the Flag
  • Ensure the flagpole is clean and free from obstructions before installation.
  • Header with Loops: Attach the loops securely to the halyard, ensuring even support.
  • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the sleeve over the top of a suitable flagpole until correctly positioned.
  • Raise the flag smoothly and avoid allowing it to touch the ground.
• Displaying the Flag
  • When flown alone, position the Japan flag at the highest point of the flagpole.
  • When displayed with other flags, ensure it is flown respectfully in accordance with local protocol.
• Flying at Half-Mast
  • Raise the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position.
  • Follow local government or organisational protocols when observing half-mast.
• Day and Night Display
  • Traditionally, the flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
  • If displayed overnight, ensure the flag is properly illuminated.
