1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Wash the flag with a mild detergent to preserve its colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. For added protection, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snags.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying as high heat can shrink or harm the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, to maintain its condition.
3. Folding the Malawi Flag:
   • Lay the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface, ensuring the flag is completely dry before folding.
   • Begin by folding the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the top and bottom edges together, while ensuring the design remains visible on the outside.
   • Fold the flag in half again, aligning the edges to create a smaller, more manageable size. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles to keep the flag neat.
   • Continue folding the flag in a series of neat folds, each time folding it into thirds or quarters, ensuring the folds are even and symmetrical.
   • When the flag is fully folded, you should have a compact, rectangular shape, with the red, black, and green stripes showing clearly, and the flag’s emblem visible on top.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
   • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened when flown, to avoid unnecessary strain on the material.

  • Using the Header with Loops: Secure the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the halyard or rope using the sister clips. Ensure the flag is aligned properly before raising it, so it flies securely and proudly.
  • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve onto the flagpole, ensuring the flag is centred and hangs properly. If the flagpole is larger than 28mm in diameter, check for custom sleeves or adaptors to ensure a secure fit before raising the flag.
  • Raise the flag briskly and with respect, ensuring it is fully extended without touching the ground.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • When flying the flag, ensure the black section with the rising sun is positioned at the top. If displayed vertically, ensure the black portion with the rising sun is on the right side when viewed from the front.
  • The flag should be flown with dignity and respect at all times, ensuring the emblem remains visible and undamaged.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • To fly the Malawi flag at half-mast, first raise the flag to the top of the pole, then lower it to the halfway point.
  • When the flag is lowered, it should be done with care, maintaining a dignified manner to honour the occasion.
  • Always raise the flag back to full mast after the appropriate period of mourning or observance has ended.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, ensuring it is flown during daylight hours only.
  • If you cannot lower the flag at sunset, it is recommended to take the flag down at the end of the day and store it properly to avoid damage.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Avoid flying the flag in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, or high winds, as this could cause wear or damage to the fabric.
  • In windy conditions, consider lowering the flag to prevent fraying or tearing. Always monitor the weather to ensure the flag remains in good condition.
• Retirement of the Flag:
