For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Mauritius flag, please follow these care guidelines:
Cleaning:
Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag with a mild detergent to preserve the colours and minimise fading. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the fabric.
Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging or tangling.
Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may cause the fabric to shrink or weaken.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent damage and mildew.
Folding the Mauritius Flag:
Lay the Flag Flat: Begin by placing the Mauritius flag on a flat surface, ensuring it is completely unfolded. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases.
Fold Lengthwise: Take the hoist side (the side with the flagpole attachment) and fold it over to align with the opposite edge of the flag. The flag should now be half its original width, with the red stripe on top.
Repeat the Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half again lengthwise, bringing the hoist side to meet the opposite edge once more. You should now have a long, narrow strip with the flag’s stripes still visible.
Fold into a Triangle: Starting from the hoist end, fold the flag at a 45-degree angle to form a triangle. Keep folding in this manner, ensuring that each fold is neat and aligned with the previous one, until you reach the end of the flag.
Final Compact Fold: Once the flag is completely folded into a compact triangle, tuck any loose ends inside to secure the shape. This method of folding helps preserve the flag’s structure while ensuring it remains compact for storage.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause snags, tears, or abrasions.
Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened to the flagpole or display area to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
Minimise Exposure: In extreme weather conditions or overnight, consider lowering the flag to protect its condition and preserve its lifespan.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, it’s best to have the flag repaired by a professional seamstress. A timely repair will extend the life of the flag.
Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear and tear, it’s recommended to replace it with a new one to ensure it continues to reflect your pride and heritage.
Flying the Mauritius Flag:
Raising the Flag
Using the Header with Loops: When raising the flag with a header that has loops, attach the loops to the flagpole’s hooks or rope securely, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
Using the Vertical Sleeve: For a flag with a vertical sleeve, slide the flag’s pole through the sleeve, ensuring it fits securely.
The flag should be raised briskly, so it flies freely and proudly at the top of the pole, ensuring it does not touch the ground.
Always raise the flag with respect, and never allow it to fly at half-mast unless specifically required.
Displaying the Flag
When displaying the Mauritius flag, ensure the flag’s front side is facing outward, with the red stripe on top.
If hanging the flag vertically, make sure the red stripe is positioned at the right side from the observer's view.
The flag should be displayed in a prominent location, ensuring it is visible and undisturbed by obstacles like trees or buildings.
The flag should be flown on the left side (from the observer's view) of a group of flags or the highest position in a flag display.
Flying the Flag Half-Mast
The Mauritius flag should be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning or respect, typically on national days of mourning or in response to significant events.
To fly the flag at half-mast, raise the flag to the top of the flagpole first, and then lower it to the halfway point.
At the end of the period of mourning, raise the flag back to the top of the pole before bringing it down.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset
It is customary to raise the Mauritius flag at sunrise, symbolising the start of a new day, and lower it at sunset, marking the end of the day.
If the flag is flown overnight, it must be illuminated by a light source to ensure it remains visible and dignified at all times.
When lowering the flag, do so slowly and carefully, ensuring the flag does not touch the ground.
Weather Conditions:
While the Mauritius flag is built to withstand various weather conditions, it is advisable to take it down during extreme weather such as strong winds, storms, or heavy rain to prevent damage.
If flying the flag outdoors, consider bringing it down during these conditions or storing it in a dry place to protect its colours and fabric integrity.
Retirement of the Flag:
When the Mauritius flag becomes worn, torn, or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
A common practice for retiring a flag is to burn it ceremoniously, symbolising the respectful end of its service. The flag should never be discarded in an inappropriate manner, and proper disposal ensures the dignity and respect it deserves is maintained.
Consider replacing the flag with a new one to continue displaying your national pride.
By following these care guidelines, your flag will remain vibrant and durable for many years to come. Caring for your flag not only preserves its quality but also honours the nation it represents.
