The Namibia Flag:
The Namibia flag carries significant meaning, with each element carefully designed to represent the country’s values and history:
Blue represents the clear skies and Atlantic Ocean that frame Namibia.
Red symbolises the people’s determination to build a future filled with unity, peace, and love.
Green stands for the country's agricultural resources and the fertility of its land.
White signifies peace and unity among the people of Namibia.
The Sun is depicted in gold, representing life and energy, a beacon of hope and progress for the nation.

For lasting quality and vibrant colours of the Namibia flag, please follow these care guidelines:
Cleaning:
Gentle Washing: Wash the flag with a mild detergent to avoid fading. Never use bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the fabric and colours.
Machine Wash: If machine washing, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snags.
Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or weaken the fabric.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Always ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry, and safe place to prevent moisture damage or mould growth.
Folding the Namibia Flag:
Lay the flag flat: Start by spreading the Namibia flag on a clean, flat surface to avoid creases or damage during the folding process.
Fold lengthwise: Bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge, ensuring the two edges align perfectly. This creates a long, narrow rectangle.
Fold again lengthwise: Take the flag and fold it in half once more, aligning the edges to reduce the flag's size. Make sure the two folds are smooth and even.
Fold the flag into a triangle: Starting at one end of the flag, fold it diagonally from one corner to the opposite edge, forming a triangular shape. Continue folding the triangle back towards the flag’s edge until it becomes compact and manageable.
Final fold: Once the flag is folded into a triangle, continue folding it neatly, ensuring the folds are tight and the edges are aligned, until the flag is a small, secure triangular bundle.
Store properly: After folding, place the flag in a clean, dry place, avoiding areas where it could get damaged or exposed to moisture. This will help preserve the fabric and keep it in top condition.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or abrasive surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly fastened to the flagpole to avoid strain on the fabric.
Minimise Exposure: To maintain the flag’s condition, take it down during extreme weather conditions or overnight.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider taking the flag to a professional for mending, or replace it to ensure it remains in top condition.
Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, it’s a good idea to replace it to maintain its visual impact during important events.
Flying the Namibia Flag:
Raising the Flag:
Using the Header with Loops: Secure the flag by threading the reinforced loops onto the halyard or rope, ensuring the flag is properly positioned and taut.
Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the vertical sleeve of the flag over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly and securely.
Raise the Namibia flag briskly to the top of the flagpole, ensuring it is taut and not touching the ground. It should be flown with the sun symbol visible and facing outward.
Always raise the flag high enough to allow it to flow freely in the wind without obstruction.
Displaying the Flag:
When displayed on a flagpole, the Namibia flag should be flown with the sun symbol on the left-hand side (from the perspective of someone facing the flag).
For indoor display, the flag should be hung with the sun symbol on the top-left corner, ensuring it remains clearly visible.
Never allow the flag to touch the ground, and ensure it is free from wrinkles, folds, or dirt to maintain its appearance.
Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
To fly the Namibia flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the flagpole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point.
Flying the flag at half-mast is typically done to mark a period of mourning or remembrance. Always return the flag to the top of the pole once the period of mourning has ended.
Ensure that the flag remains at half-mast for the appropriate duration, based on the occasion or guidance from national authorities.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
When flying the flag outdoors, raise the Namibia flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset, unless the flag is illuminated at night.
During sunset, the flag should be lowered slowly and respectfully, ensuring it is properly folded and stored when not in use.
If flying the flag at night, make sure it is adequately lit by a light source so that it remains visible and honours the flag’s significance.
Weather Conditions:
In adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain, storms, or high winds, it’s advisable to lower the Namibia flag to prevent damage.
If flying the flag during inclement weather, ensure it is securely fastened and able to withstand strong winds without fraying or tearing.
Consider bringing the flag down during harsh weather and only flying it again once conditions improve to preserve its quality.
Retirement of the Flag:
When the Namibia flag becomes worn, torn, or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
Retiring the flag involves ensuring that it is disposed of in a dignified manner, such as burning it in a respectful ceremony or donating it to a local group that can handle the retirement properly.
Never throw the flag away in a disrespectful manner. Instead, ensure it is disposed of with the reverence that reflects its national significance.
By following these guidelines, your flag will maintain its vivid colours and continue to represent your pride and heritage for years to come. Proper care ensures that your flag remains a symbol of dignity and respect.
