To help maintain the quality and vibrant colours of your Puerto Rico flag, follow these care guidelines:
- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean the flag and minimise fading. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as these may damage the fabric and colours.
- Machine Washing: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to help prevent snagging or tearing.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as high heat may shrink or weaken the fabric.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Folding the Puerto Rico Flag:
- Hold the flag horizontally and ensure it is fully extended and free from creases.
- Fold the flag lengthwise, bringing the bottom edge up to meet the top edge while keeping the blue triangle and white star visible.
- Fold it lengthwise again, aligning the edges neatly and keeping the white star centred within the blue triangle.
- Starting at the striped end, fold the flag into a triangular shape by bringing the corner up to the opposite edge.
- Continue folding in a triangular pattern, keeping each fold neat and aligned until you reach the blue triangle and white star.
- Tuck the remaining edge into the fold to secure the flag for neat storage or presentation.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp or abrasive surfaces to help prevent snags and tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is firmly attached to help reduce unnecessary strain on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during harsh weather or overnight to help preserve its condition.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: Address small tears or fraying promptly and consult a professional seamstress where required.
- Replacement: If the flag becomes significantly worn, consider replacing it to maintain a presentable display for important occasions.
Flying the Puerto Rico Flag
- Raising the Flag:
- Header with Loops: Attach the loops to the halyard clips and ensure they are securely fastened for a stable display.
- Vertical Sleeve: Slide the pole through the sleeve until the flag is fully supported and securely positioned.
- Raise the flag carefully to the top of the flagpole.
- Keep the flag from touching the ground during raising and lowering.
- Displaying the Flag:
- When displayed with other flags, position the Puerto Rico flag appropriately for the display setting and applicable flag protocol.
- When flown with the United States flag, follow the relevant flag display protocol.
- For indoor display, position the flag prominently with the blue triangle at the hoist side or display it on a suitable stand.
- Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position.
- Position the flag approximately halfway between the top and bottom of the flagpole.
- Before lowering the flag for the day, raise it to the top of the pole before bringing it down carefully.
- Sunrise and Sunset Display:
- Where following traditional flag etiquette, raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset unless it is appropriately illuminated for night-time display.
- Lower the flag carefully and fold it neatly before storage.
- Weather Conditions:
- Avoid flying the flag during severe weather, including heavy rain, strong winds or storms, as these conditions may cause damage.
- Check the flag regularly when used outdoors and remove it when conditions may place excessive strain on the fabric.
- Retiring a Worn Flag:
- When the flag becomes significantly worn, faded or damaged, retire it respectfully.
- Follow appropriate local guidance or contact a relevant community or veterans' organisation for advice on respectful flag disposal.
