For lasting quality and vibrant colours, please follow these care guidelines:
Cleaning:
Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to preserve colours and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may cause fading.
Machine Wash: If using a washing machine, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Placing the flag in a mesh laundry bag helps prevent damage.
Air Drying: Lay flat or hang to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or weaken the fabric.
Storage:
Proper Storage: Dry the flag completely dry before storing to prevent mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Folding the Sweden Flag:
Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, dry surface with the yellow Nordic cross facing upwards. Smooth out any wrinkles for an even fold.
Fold Lengthwise: Bring the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, keeping the yellow cross visible. Ensure the edges align neatly.
Fold Lengthwise Again: Fold the flag once more in the same direction, maintaining the rectangular shape while reducing its width.
Create a Compact Fold: Continue folding the flag horizontally in equal sections until it forms a manageable rectangle.
Final Adjustments: Gently press along the folds to keep them crisp. If storing for an extended period, roll the flag loosely instead of folding to avoid deep creases.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep away from rough surfaces or sharp edges that may cause snags.
Secure Installation: Attach securely to prevent stress on the fabric.
Minimise Exposure: To extend its lifespan, take the flag down during extreme weather conditions.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: Address small frays or tears promptly by taking the flag to a professional seamstress.
Replacement: If the flag becomes significantly worn or faded, consider replacing it for a fresh, professional appearance.
Flying the Sweden Flag:
Raising the Flag:
Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops to the halyard clips, fastening it tightly before hoisting. Pull the halyard steadily to raise the flag to the top.
Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve opening, making sure the flag is evenly distributed along the pole before lifting it upright for display.
Always raise the flag briskly and with respect. It should be hoisted smoothly to the top of the flagpole without any interruptions.
In official ceremonies or national events, the flag should be raised while the Swedish national anthem, Du gamla, Du fria, is played or observed in silence.
Displaying the Flag:
The Swedish flag should always be flown in a dignified manner, extending it fully and not touching the ground or any nearby objects.
When displayed on a flagpole, it must be placed at the highest point if flown with other non-national flags.
The yellow cross should remain in its proper orientation, with the longer arm extending to the right when viewed from the front.
Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
To fly the flag at half-mast, first hoist it fully to the top of the flagpole before lowering it to a position roughly one-third down from the top.
On days of mourning, the flag remains at half-mast until sunset. If the flag is lowered before then, it should first be raised to the top before being fully lowered.
When flying alongside other flags at half-mast, the Sweden flag should be raised first and lowered last.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
In Sweden, the flag is traditionally raised at 8:00 AM from March to October and at 9:00 AM from November to February. It should always be lowered before sunset.
If flown during the dark hours, it should be illuminated for visibility.
On significant occasions, such as Sweden’s National Day (6 June), the flag is flown from morning until late evening.
Weather Conditions:
Avoid flying the flag in extreme weather, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or snowstorms, as this can cause premature wear and damage.
If the flag becomes wet, allow it to dry completely before storage to prevent mildew or fabric deterioration.
Regularly inspect the flag for signs of fading or fraying, replacing it when necessary to maintain a respectful display.
Retirement of the Flag:
When the Sweden flag is too worn or damaged to be displayed with dignity, it should be retired properly rather than discarded.
The preferred method of disposal is burning it respectfully in a private setting. Alternatively, some organisations offer flag retirement services.
Never throw away a flag in regular waste. If burning is not possible, fold the flag neatly and store it in a dedicated container before disposal.
By following these care instructions, your flag will remain in excellent condition, reflecting the pride and heritage it represents.
