1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Use a soft detergent when cleaning your flag to protect the colours and fabric integrity. Refrain from using bleach or other abrasive substances.
   • Machine Wash: If necessary, wash in cold water on a delicate cycle. To prevent damage, place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag.
   • Air Drying: Hang or lay flat to dry in the shade. Do not tumble dry, as heat may cause the fabric to shrink or weaken over time.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Dry the flag thoroughly before putting it away. Store it in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area to prevent mildew and fabric deterioration.
3. Folding the United States of America Flag:
   • Begin with two people: Hold the flag waist-high and horizontally between you, making sure it is taut and flat.
   • Fold lengthwise once: Bring the bottom edge of the flag up to meet the top edge with the stars facing outward.
   • Fold lengthwise again: Repeat the previous step, folding it once more lengthwise so the flag is now a quarter of its original height, with the stars still visible.
   • Start the triangular fold: Beginning at the striped end, fold the corner diagonally to form a triangle.
   • Continue the triangle folds: Repeat the triangular folding motion, moving towards the blue field, keeping edges tight and aligned.
   • Tuck the end: Once only the blue union with stars remains, neatly tuck any remaining fabric into the final fold to secure the shape.
   • Ensure proper appearance: The final folded flag should resemble a triangle with only the blue field and white stars visible — a sign of respect and honour.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Avoid exposing your flag to sharp edges, rough surfaces, or anything that could cause rips or pulls.
   • Secure Installation: Properly secure the flag to prevent stress or damage to the material during windy conditions.
   • Minimise Exposure: Take the flag down during storms, high winds, or overnight to preserve its condition and colours.
5. Repairs:

• Raising the Flag:

  • Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flagpole through the sleeve, fitting it snugly.
  • Always raise the flag briskly to the top of the pole, symbolising strength and pride.
  • Hoist the flag with respect. Never allow it to touch the ground during the process.
  • If flying alongside other flags, the U.S. flag should be raised first and positioned in the place of honour (typically the highest or farthest left from the observer’s viewpoint).
• Displaying the Flag:
  • When hung vertically or horizontally on a wall or in a window, the blue field with stars (the union) should always be at the top left from the viewer’s perspective.
  • If flown with other national flags, each should be on a separate pole of equal height, with no flag displayed above or to the right of the U.S. flag.
  • The flag should never be used as drapery, clothing, or for covering any surface or item.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • When flown at half-mast, first raise the flag fully to the top of the pole, pause momentarily, then lower it to halfway down.
  • When taking it down, raise it to the peak again before lowering completely.
  • Half-mast is observed on specific occasions such as national days of mourning or by order of the President or state governors.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset only. If left up overnight, it must be illuminated to remain respectful.

  • Do not display the flag in inclement weather unless it is made from all-weather material designed to withstand rain and wind.
