Displaying the Royal Australian Air Force Ensign
The Royal Australian Air Force Ensign represents the RAAF and should only be displayed with the appropriate permission in an approved Air Force, military, ceremonial, commemorative or heritage setting.
Please note: Permission is required to fly or use a Defence ensign. Approval and display guidance should be obtained from the relevant Defence service brand manager or Royal Australian Air Force authority.

Before Displaying the Ensign
- Confirm that the required permission has been obtained before displaying the ensign.
- Follow any conditions or display instructions provided by the relevant RAAF or Defence authority.
- Ensure the intended location and occasion are appropriate for an official service ensign.

Raising the Flag
- Ensure the flagpole is secure and free from obstructions before installation.
- For Header with Loops finishes, attach the loops securely using suitable clips and a halyard system.
- For Vertical Sleeve finishes, slide the sleeve carefully over the presentation pole and secure it as required.
- Raise or position the flag carefully without allowing it to drag along or touch the ground.

Displaying the Flag Correctly
- Ensure the Union Jack is positioned in the upper hoist canton, closest to the top of the flagpole.
- The large Commonwealth Star should appear beneath the Union Jack, with the Southern Cross and RAAF kangaroo roundel positioned in the fly.
- Display the ensign securely and allow sufficient clearance for it to fly freely.
- Do not allow the flag to contact the ground, nearby walls, trees, rooflines or other obstructions.
- When displayed with other flags, follow the order of precedence and protocol provided by the relevant RAAF, Defence, ceremonial or event authority.

Half-Mast Display
- The Royal Australian Air Force Ensign should only be flown at half-mast when officially directed or when the appropriate Defence protocol applies.
- Raise the flag fully to the top of the flagpole before lowering it to the prescribed half-mast position.
- Before lowering it completely, raise it to the top of the flagpole once more.

Day and Night Display
- Follow the directions of the relevant Royal Australian Air Force, Defence, ceremonial or event authority regarding raising and lowering times.
- If the flag is displayed overnight, it should be appropriately illuminated.

Weather Conditions
- Avoid displaying the flag during severe weather wherever possible.
- Lower and store the flag during extreme winds, storms or other damaging conditions to help extend its lifespan.
- Allow a wet flag to dry completely before folding or storing it.
