To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of the China flag, follow these care instructions:

1. Cleaning:
   • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent when cleaning the flag to maintain its vibrant colours and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that can cause fading.
   • Machine Wash: If necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and set your washing machine to a gentle cycle with cold water to protect it from damage.
   • Drying: Allow the flag to air dry by laying it flat or hanging it up. Do not use a tumble dryer, as excessive heat can shrink or damage the material.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it to avoid mould and mildew. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its colours.
3. Folding the China Flag:
   • Preparation: Begin by placing the flag flat on a clean, dry surface, ensuring the side with the stars is facing down to safeguard the design.
   • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, bringing the left edge to meet the right edge, ensuring the corners are aligned perfectly.
   • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise once more, lowering the top edge to meet the bottom edge, which further minimises its size and protects the colours.
   • Horizontal Folding: Next, fold the flag horizontally from the bottom upwards, creating a neat rectangle that facilitates compact storage while preserving the flag's integrity.
   • Final Roll: Starting from the side with the attachment, gently roll the flag towards the fluttering end. Maintain a firm roll without making it too tight to prevent creasing the fabric.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items and rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
   • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is firmly fastened to its pole or support, allowing it to move freely while displayed.
   • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or at night to minimise exposure to the elements.
5. Repairs:
   • Minor Repairs: For fraying or wear, consider using a spare flag while arranging for professional repairs by a seamstress to restore the damaged flag.
   • Replacement: As the flag ages, plan to replace it to ensure you always have a fresh and vibrant flag for important occasions.

Flying the China Flag:

• Raising the Flag:
  • Ensure that the flagpole is clean and free from any hindrances.
  • Grip the flag by its hoist (the side with loops or sleeve) and securely attach it to the pole.
  • Hoist the flag quickly and smoothly, ensuring it doesn’t touch the ground, and raise it fully to the top of the pole.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • When displayed alongside other flags, position the China Flag to the right of the other flags, ensuring it is at the same height or higher.
  • For indoor displays, place the flag on a staff to the right of the main entrance or on a platform, ensuring it is easily visible.
  • Ensure that no objects obstruct the flag, allowing it to move freely in the wind.
• Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
  • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly, then lower it to the halfway point.
  • This practice signifies mourning and respect and should be observed on designated days or during periods of national tragedy.
  • After the mourning period, ensure the flag is raised back to full height.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If it is to be left up overnight, ensure it is properly illuminated.
  • If flying the flag overnight without lighting, take it down at sunset to honour its symbolism.
  • During special events, the flag may be illuminated or flown 24 hours a day as needed.
• Weather Considerations:
  • Refrain from flying the flag during severe weather conditions, such as storms or high winds, as this may damage the fabric.
  • If rain or snow is anticipated, consider taking the flag down to maintain its quality.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • When the flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired with respect.
  • The suggested method for retirement is to burn the flag in a dignified ceremony, with all participants honouring its significance.
  • After burning, ensure that any remaining ashes are buried or disposed of respectfully to uphold the flag’s dignity.
