1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag using a mild detergent to minimise colour fading. Avoid bleach or any harsh chemicals that could damage the flag’s colours.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging during the wash.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it up to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or harm the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before placing it away. Store the flag in a cool, dry area to prevent any moisture-related damage.
3. Folding the China Flag:
   • Preparation: Start by laying the flag flat on a clean, dry surface with the flag's display facing down.
   • First Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the left edge with the right edge. Ensure that the corners are neatly matched.
   • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. This further reduces the flag’s size and protects the colours.
   • Horizontal Folding: Next, fold the flag horizontally from the bottom to the top, creating a rectangle. This helps in compact storage while keeping the flag intact.
   • Final Roll: Starting from the hoist side (the side with the attachment), gently roll the flag towards the fly end (the side that flutters). Keep the roll firm but not too tight to avoid creasing the fabric.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp items or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
   • Secure Installation: Make sure the flag is securely fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
   • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during severe weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
5. Repairs:
   • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag and taking the damaged one to a professional seamstress for repairs.
   • Replacement: When the flag exhibits significant wear, think about purchasing a new one to ensure it looks its best during important events.

Flying the China Flag:

• Raising the Flag:
  • Ensure the flagpole is clean and free of any obstructions.
  • Hold the flag by its hoist (the side with loops or sleeve) and attach it securely to the pole.
  • Raise the flag briskly, ensuring it does not touch the ground. The flag should be hoisted all the way to the top of the pole.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • When displayed with other flags, ensure the China Flag is positioned to the right of the other flags and at the same height or higher.
  • If displayed indoors, place the flag on a staff to the right of the main entrance or on a platform, ensuring it is prominent and visible.
  • Ensure that the flag is not obstructed by other objects, allowing it to flow freely in the wind.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • To fly the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole briefly before lowering it to the halfway point.
  • This gesture is a sign of mourning and respect and should be observed on designated days or during national tragedies.
  • Ensure that the flag is again raised to full height after the designated period of mourning.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If left flying overnight, ensure the flag is properly illuminated.
  • If flying the flag during nighttime without a light, it should be taken down at sunset to honour its symbolism.
  • During special occasions, the flag may be illuminated or flown 24 hours a day if necessary.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Avoid flying the flag during severe weather, including storms or high winds, as this can damage the fabric.
  • If rain or snow is expected, consider taking the flag down to preserve its integrity.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • When the flag becomes tattered, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
  • The recommended method of retirement is to burn the flag in a dignified ceremony, ensuring that all participants honour its significance.
  • After the burning, ensure that any remaining ashes are buried or disposed of respectfully to maintain the flag’s dignity.
