To ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of your India flag, follow these care instructions:

1. Cleaning:
   • Wash Gently: Use a mild detergent when cleaning the flag to protect its colour and fabric integrity. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, place the flag in a mesh laundry bag and select a gentle cycle with cold water to prevent damage.
   • Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Refrain from using a tumble dryer, as high heat can shrink or harm the material.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing to avoid mould or mildew. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
3. Folding the India Flag:
   • Prepare the Surface: Lay the flag flat on a clean surface with the front side facing downwards.
   • Initial Fold: Begin by folding the hoist side (the side with the flagpole attachment) towards the opposite edge, aligning the sides to form a long rectangle.
   • Second Fold: Fold the flag in half lengthwise once more, making sure the edges stay aligned, resulting in a narrower rectangle.
   • Creating Triangles: From the hoist side, create a triangular fold by bringing the bottom corner of the rectangle up to meet the top edge, forming a triangle. Press the fold down firmly.
   • Continue Folding: Take the triangle you just made and fold it over itself, repeating this process until you reach the flag's end. Each fold should create a neat triangle that overlaps the last.
   • Final Touch: Tuck in any loose fabric within the last fold to achieve a neat and tidy finish.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces to prevent snags and tears.
   • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly secured to allow for movement while displayed.
   • Flag Exposure: To extend the life of the flag, take it down during severe weather or at night to minimise exposure to harsh conditions.
5. Repairs:
   • Minor Repairs: If you notice fraying or wear, replace the flag with a spare and have the damaged one professionally repaired by a seamstress.
   • Replacement: As the flag nears the end of its lifespan, consider purchasing a new one to ensure you always have a fresh flag for important events.

Flying the India Flag:

• Raising the Flag:
  • Before raising the flag, confirm it is clean and undamaged.
  • Using the Header with Loops:
    • Confirm that the reinforced loops at the top of the flag are firmly connected to the hooks or clips on the flagpole.
    • Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the flag hangs freely, avoiding any twists or obstructions.
  • Using the Vertical Sleeve:
    • Carefully slide the flag into the vertical sleeve, ensuring it fits comfortably without being overly tight.
    • Attach the sleeve to the pole, ensuring the flag can move up and down smoothly without getting caught.
  • Pause briefly once the flag is at the top to acknowledge its importance before securing it.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • Ensure the flag is prominently displayed so it can be easily seen and appreciated.
  • The flag should always be hoisted to full height and never allowed to touch the ground.
  • When hanging the flag, position the saffron band at the top, with the white and green bands below, and ensure the Ashoka Chakra is facing forward.
• Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
  • To fly the flag at half-mast in honour of a national tragedy or significant event, first raise it fully to the top before lowering it to half-mast.
  • The flag should rest halfway down the flagpole as a symbol of mourning and respect.
  • When returning the flag to full height, raise it back to the top first before lowering it completely.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset to respect its significance.
  • If illuminated during the night, the flag may be flown continuously, but ensure it remains in excellent condition.
  • Show care and respect when handling the flag during these times, whether raising or lowering it.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Refrain from flying the flag during severe weather, such as heavy rain, storms, or strong winds, to avoid damage.
  • If adverse weather is anticipated, consider lowering the flag to protect its integrity.
  • While flags made from durable materials can endure various weather conditions, it’s essential to maintain their appearance with care.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • When the flag becomes worn, faded, or irreparably damaged, it should be retired with dignity.
  • The preferred method for retirement is to burn the flag in a respectful ceremony, ensuring it is disposed of appropriately.
  • Afterward, collect and dispose of any remains with care, honouring the flag and what it represents.
