1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Always wash flags with a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that could damage the colours.
   • Machine Wash: If you need to machine wash, select a gentle cycle with cold water. Use a mesh laundry bag to protect the flag from snagging.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying as high heat may shrink or damage the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep the flag in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.
3. Folding the Malta Flag:
   • Begin by carefully spreading the flag flat on a clean, smooth surface to ensure there are no creases or folds before starting.
   • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the top and bottom edges, with the design facing outward.
   • Next, fold the flag in half widthwise, bringing the left and right edges together, ensuring the emblem is still visible on the outside.
   • Continue folding the flag into smaller sections by folding it in thirds, starting from one side, making sure each fold is even and aligned.
   • For a compact fold, make the final folds as small as necessary, creating a neat, rectangular shape with the design still visible on top.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause snags or tears.
   • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened when displayed to prevent undue strain on the fabric.
   • Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag indoors during extreme weather or overnight to maintain its condition.
5. Repairs:
   • Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider replacing the flag or taking it to a professional seamstress for repairs.
   • Replacement: When the flag begins to show signs of significant wear, it’s time to replace it to maintain its appearance during special occasions.

Flying the Malta Flag:

• Raising the Flag:
  • For Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the flagpole or rope using the sister clips, ensuring a secure and tight fit. Once securely fastened, raise the flag to the desired height using the hoisting mechanism.
  • For Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly and the fabric is not bunched up.
  • Ensure the flag is flown to full height, allowing it to unfurl and fly freely in the wind. It should not be allowed to drag on the ground.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • Ensure the flag is correctly oriented when displayed. The St. George's cross should always be positioned in the top-left corner when the flag is flown or hung horizontally.
  • When the flag is displayed vertically, St. George's cross should be on the right side. This ensures the correct representation of Malta’s national identity.
  • The flag should be flown on its own flagpole, unless it is part of a multi-flag display, in which case the Malta flag should take a place of honour, at the highest point or to the farthest left (when displayed with other flags of equal height).
  • Ensure the flag is displayed in a respectful manner, without it touching the ground or being exposed to harsh elements for extended periods.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • The Malta flag should be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning or respect, typically on the day of a national or public tragedy.
  • To properly raise the flag to half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole and then lower it to the halfway point.
  • When lowering the flag from half-mast, always raise it back to the top before bringing it down entirely as a mark of respect.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The Malta flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, ensuring it is flown at full height during daylight hours.
  • If the flag is illuminated at night, it can be flown after sunset, but should always be taken down if it is not properly lit.
  • The flag should be raised at dawn with respect and ceremoniously lowered at dusk, ensuring the fabric does not touch the ground.
• Weather Conditions:
  • During extreme weather conditions, such as high winds or heavy rain, it’s best to bring the flag inside to protect it from damage.
  • The flag should not be flown in conditions that could cause it to tear, such as strong storms or during very heavy wind.
  • If the flag becomes wet, ensure it is dried thoroughly before storing to prevent mildew or damage.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • When the Malta flag becomes worn or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully, not discarded in the trash.
  • To retire the flag, it is common practice to burn it ceremoniously or, alternatively, to bury it in a respectful location.
