- Cleaning:
- Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to clean your flag and minimise colour fading. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may damage the fabric.
- Machine Washing: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to help prevent snags.
- Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat may shrink or damage the material.
- Storage:
- Proper Storage: Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to help prevent moisture damage.
- Folding the Philippines Flag:
- Lay the flag flat: Spread the flag on a clean, flat surface with the design facing upwards.
- Fold lengthwise: Gently fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the edges neatly. The sun and white triangle should remain visible on the outside.
- Fold in half again: Fold the flag lengthwise once more, keeping the edges aligned and the design facing outward.
- Create a triangle: Starting at the hoist side, fold the flag diagonally into a triangle. Continue folding the triangle over itself using neat, even folds.
- Tuck the end: Once the flag is folded into a compact triangle, tuck the remaining end into the fold to secure it neatly.
- Handling:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp objects and rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
- Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely attached when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.
- Minimise Exposure: Bring the flag down during extreme weather conditions or overnight to help preserve its quality.
- Repairs:
- Minor Repairs: For small tears or fraying, consider taking the damaged flag to a professional for repair.
- Replacement: If the flag shows significant wear, consider replacing it to maintain a vibrant and presentable display.
Flying the Philippines Flag
- Raising the Flag:
- Using Header with Loops: Secure the reinforced loops to the flagpole using the sister clips or ropes. Ensure the loops are evenly positioned and securely attached.
- Using Vertical Sleeve: Slide the vertical sleeve over the top of the flagpole and ensure the sleeve fits securely around the pole.
- Raise the flag slowly and respectfully.
- When fully hoisted, the red stripe should be positioned at the bottom.
- Displaying the Flag:
- When displayed with other flags, position the Philippines flag appropriately in the position of honour.
- For indoor display, place the flag in a prominent position with the sun and triangle upright.
- Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
- The Philippines flag may be flown at half-mast during national periods of mourning.
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole before slowly lowering it to the half-mast position.
- At the end of the mourning period, return the flag to full height.
- Sunrise and Sunset:
- The flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If displayed overnight, appropriate illumination should be provided.
- Raise the flag briskly and lower it slowly and respectfully.
- Weather Conditions:
- Avoid flying the flag during heavy rain, strong winds or storms, as harsh conditions may damage the fabric.
- Lower and safely store the flag when severe weather is expected.
- Inspect the flag for wear or damage after exposure to adverse weather.
- Retirement of the Flag:
- When the flag becomes worn, torn or faded beyond repair, it should be retired respectfully.
- Consider contacting an appropriate local organisation for guidance on respectful flag retirement and disposal.
