To help maintain the vibrant colours and extend the life of your Singapore Flag, follow these recommended care guidelines.
- Cleaning
- Gentle washing: Wash using a mild detergent to help preserve the fabric and colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Machine washing: If required, use a gentle cold-water cycle and place the flag inside a mesh laundry bag to help prevent snags.
- Air drying: Hang or lay the flag flat to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying or high heat.
- Storage
- Ensure the flag is completely dry before storing it in a cool, dry location to help prevent moisture damage.
- Folding the Singapore Flag
- Lay the flag flat on a clean surface.
- Fold it lengthwise so the red and white sections align, keeping the crescent moon and stars visible.
- Fold it lengthwise once more with the red section on the outside.
- Fold into thirds, keeping the folds even and compact.
- Continue folding until the flag forms a neat rectangle with the crescent moon and stars visible on the outer fold.
- Handling
- Avoid contact with sharp edges or rough surfaces that may damage the fabric.
- Ensure the flag is securely attached before display.
- For longer service life, remove the flag during extreme weather or overnight where practical.
- Repairs
- Minor tears or loose stitching can often be professionally repaired.
- If the flag becomes excessively worn or damaged, replacing it will ensure it continues to present well.
Flying the Singapore Flag
- Raising the Flag
- Header with Loops: Secure the reinforced loops to the flagpole or rope using sister clips before raising the flag.
- Vertical Sleeve: Slide the sleeve over a suitable flagpole for a secure fit.
- Raise the flag briskly without allowing it to touch the ground.
- When displayed, ensure the crescent moon and five stars face forward.
- Displaying the Flag
- When displayed horizontally, position the crescent moon and stars in the upper left corner.
- When displayed vertically, the crescent moon and stars should appear in the upper right, with the red section on the right.
- Avoid allowing the flag to touch the ground or floor.
- Flying at Half-Mast
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position.
- When lowering the flag, return it to the top before bringing it down completely.
- Daily Display
- Raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset unless it is properly illuminated overnight.
- Lower and fold the flag carefully after use.
- Weather Conditions
- Avoid displaying the flag during severe weather, including strong winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms.
- Remove the flag promptly if conditions deteriorate to help reduce unnecessary wear.
- Retiring the Flag
- When the flag becomes worn beyond repair, retire it respectfully in accordance with local customs or official guidance.
