1. Cleaning:
   • Gentle Washing: Always wash the flag with a mild detergent to help preserve the colours. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the fabric and cause fading.
   • Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snags.
   • Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
2. Storage:
   • Proper Storage: Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture-related damage.
3. Folding the Singapore Flag:
   • Start by laying the flag flat on a clean surface.
   • Fold the flag in half lengthwise, aligning the red and white sections, ensuring the crescent moon and stars remain visible on the red portion.
   • Fold the flag in half again, keeping the red portion on the outside, ensuring the flag remains compact and neat.
   • Fold the flag into thirds, bringing the bottom edge up towards the top, ensuring the folds are even and the flag is symmetrical.
   • Continue folding until the flag is a small, rectangular shape, with the red section on the outside and the crescent moon and stars visible on the top fold.
4. Handling:
   • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges or rough surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
   • Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is securely fastened when displayed to prevent unnecessary strain on the fabric.

• Raising the Flag:
  • Using the Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops at the top of the flag to the flagpole or rope using sister clips. Ensure the flag is securely fastened before raising it to the top of the pole.
  • Using the Vertical Sleeve: Slide the flag’s vertical sleeve over the flagpole, ensuring it fits snugly.
  • The flag should be raised briskly, ensuring it reaches the top of the flagpole without touching the ground. Always raise the flag with the crescent moon and five stars facing forward, so they are visible to observers.
  • If you are raising the flag at a public or official event, ensure that it is raised at the same height as any other flags being displayed.
• Displaying the Flag:
  • When displayed horizontally, the crescent moon and five stars should be positioned in the top left corner, with the red portion at the top.
  • If the flag is displayed vertically, the crescent moon and stars should appear in the upper right corner with the red portion on the right side.
  • Always ensure the flag is not touching the ground or floor to show respect for the symbol it represents.
• Flying the Flag Half-Mast:
  • The flag should be flown at half-mast to mark a period of mourning or remembrance. To achieve this, raise the flag to the top of the flagpole first, then lower it to the half-mast position.
  • When lowering the flag from half-mast, raise it back to the top before bringing it down completely, as a sign of respect.
• Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
  • The Singapore flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. If it is flown overnight, it should be illuminated to ensure it remains visible at all times.
  • When lowering the flag at sunset, ensure it is done respectfully and with care, ensuring the flag is folded properly.
• Weather Conditions:
  • Avoid flying the Singapore flag in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, or thunderstorms, as these can cause damage to the fabric.
  • If the flag is flown in inclement weather, it should be taken down promptly to prevent wear and tear.
• Retirement of the Flag:
  • When the flag becomes worn, torn, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner. A ceremonial burning or burial of the flag is the most appropriate way to dispose of it.
