xSudan Flag Care Instructions
Follow these care instructions to help maintain the flag’s colour, condition and appearance.
Cleaning
- Gentle washing: Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach or strong chemicals that may cause fading.
- Machine washing: If required, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to help reduce the risk of damage.
- Air drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat may weaken the fabric.
Storage
- Make sure the flag is completely dry before storing it.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place to help prevent moisture damage and mildew.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the folded flag.
Folding the Sudan Flag
- Lay the flag flat on a clean, dry surface, with the red stripe at the top and the green triangle on the hoist side.
- Fold the flag lengthwise, keeping the edges aligned neatly.
- Fold it lengthwise again to create a narrower shape.
- Continue folding the flag into a compact rectangle suitable for storage.
- Store the folded flag in a cool, dry place.
Handling
- Avoid sharp objects: Keep the flag away from sharp edges and abrasive surfaces that may cause snags or tears.
- Secure installation: Fasten the flag correctly to avoid unnecessary strain on the fabric and fittings.
- Extreme weather: Take the flag down during storms, heavy rain or strong winds to help reduce wear and damage.
Repairs and Replacement

Flying and Displaying the Sudan Flag
Raising the Flag
- Ensure the flag is securely attached to the halyard or pole before raising it.
- Raise the flag smoothly and carefully.
- Check that the flag can fly freely without catching on nearby objects.
Displaying the Flag
- Display the green triangle on the hoist side, with the red stripe at the top.
- Position the flag prominently during cultural events, national celebrations and official displays.
- When displaying several flags together, follow the applicable venue or local flag-display protocol.
Flying at Half-Mast
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half-mast position.
- Before taking it down, raise it to the top again and then lower it completely.
Sunrise, Sunset and Night Display
- When following traditional flag etiquette, raise the flag at sunrise and lower it at sunset.
- If displayed overnight, ensure it remains clearly visible and appropriately illuminated.
Weather Conditions
- Avoid flying the flag during severe weather, including storms, heavy rain and strong winds.
- If the flag becomes wet, allow it to dry completely before folding or storing it.
Retiring a Worn Flag
