xHow to Care for Your Suriname Flag
Follow these care guidelines to help keep your flag clean, presentable and ready for display.
Cleaning
- Gentle washing: Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that may affect the fabric or colours.
- Machine washing: If machine washing is necessary, use cold water and a gentle cycle. Place the flag in a mesh laundry bag to help prevent snagging.
- Air drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer.
Storage
- Make sure the flag is completely dry before folding and storing it.
- Keep it in a cool, dry location away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Store the flag in a protective case or clean storage area to reduce dust and creasing.
Folding the Suriname Flag
- Lay the flag flat: Place it on a clean, flat surface with the design facing upwards.
- Make the first lengthwise fold: Bring the top green stripe down towards the bottom green stripe, keeping the central red stripe and yellow star visible.
- Make the second lengthwise fold: Fold it lengthwise again and align the edges neatly.
- Create a compact fold: Fold the flag into small, even sections or a clean rectangular shape.
- Prepare it for storage: Continue folding until it forms a compact rectangle that can be stored safely.
Handling
- Avoid sharp objects: Keep the flag away from rough surfaces and sharp items that could damage the fabric.
- Secure installation: Make sure the flag is correctly attached before raising or displaying it.
- Limit extreme-weather exposure: Take the flag down during storms, heavy rain or strong winds.
Repairs and Replacement
- Minor repairs: Small tears or frayed areas should be repaired promptly to prevent further damage.
- Replacement: Consider replacing the flag once it becomes significantly faded, torn or worn.
Flying the Suriname Flag
Raising the Flag
- Check that the flag is clean and free from significant damage before raising it.
- Header with Loops: Attach the reinforced loops to the halyard using the supplied sister clips and check that the connection is secure.
- Vertical Sleeve: Slide the compatible pole through the sleeve and position the flag correctly before securing the pole.
- Raise the flag smoothly and make sure it can fly freely without touching nearby objects.
Displaying the Flag
- Display the Suriname flag in a clear and prominent position.
- When mounted on a wall, hang it flat with the yellow star upright and centred.
- When displayed with other national flags, position it at the appropriate height and order of precedence.
- When displayed vertically, make sure the red stripe and yellow star are correctly oriented.
Flying at Half-Mast
- Half-mast display may be used as a sign of mourning or respect.
- Raise the flag to the top of the pole before slowly lowering it to the half-mast position.
- When lowering it at the end of the display period, raise it briefly to the top before bringing it down fully.
Sunrise, Sunset and Night Display
- The flag may be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.
- If displayed after dark, use suitable lighting so the flag remains visible.
- Lower the flag carefully and fold it before storage.
Weather Conditions
- Avoid displaying the flag during heavy rain, strong winds, storms or other extreme weather.
- If the flag becomes wet, allow it to air dry completely before storing it.
- Inspect the edges, seams and attachment points regularly for signs of wear.
Retiring a Worn Flag
- A flag that is torn, badly faded or excessively worn should be retired respectfully and replaced.
