To keep your flag looking its best, follow these simple care instructions:
Cleaning:
Gentle Washing: Use a mild detergent to prevent fading. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that may weaken the fabric.
Machine Wash: If machine washing is necessary, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Placing the flag in a mesh laundry bag helps prevent snagging.
Air Drying: Lay the flag flat or hang it to dry naturally. Avoid tumble drying, as excessive heat can cause shrinking or damage.
Storage:
Proper Storage: The flag should be completely dry before storing it. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture-related damage.
Folding the Togo Flag:
Lay the Flag Flat: Place the flag on a clean, dry surface with the green stripe at the top and the white star in the red square positioned in the upper left corner.
First Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half horizontally, bringing the bottom edge up to align with the top edge. The red square with the white star should remain visible.
Second Lengthwise Fold: Fold the flag in half horizontally again, keeping the edges aligned. The red square should still be visible on top.
Begin the Triangular Folds: Start at the bottom right corner and fold it diagonally toward the top edge to form a triangle. Continue folding the flag in a series of triangular folds, each fold should be neat and precise.
Final Fold and Storage: Once the entire flag is folded into a compact triangular shape, the white star should remain visible on the final fold. Store the folded flag in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight, to preserve its colours and fabric quality.
Handling:
Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep away from sharp surfaces that could tear or fray the fabric.
Secure Installation: Ensure the flag is properly attached to prevent unnecessary strain.
Minimise Exposure: Take down the flag during harsh weather conditions to extend its lifespan.
Repairs:
Minor Repairs: For small tears, replace the flag and consider professional repairs to extend its use.
Replacement: When the flag shows significant wear, upgrading to a new one ensures a fresh and dignified display.
Flying the Togo Flag:
Raising the Flag:
The flag should be completely unfolded and untangled before hoisting.
Attach the flag securely to the halyard (rope) or pole to prevent it from slipping or detaching.
Raise the flag swiftly and steadily to the top of the pole to demonstrate respect and honour.
If raising the flag alongside others, the Togo flag should not be lower than any other national flag.
Displaying the Flag:
The Togo flag should always be displayed in its proper orientation, with the red square and white star in the upper left corner when hung horizontally.
When mounted on a flagpole, it should fly freely without obstructions.
If displayed indoors, the flag should be hung on a wall or backdrop with prominence, not letting it draped or touching the floor.
For events or official ceremonies, the Togo flag should hold a position of honour, preferably in the centre or to the right of other flags.
Flying the Flag at Half-Mast:
Lowering the flag to half-mast is a symbol of mourning or remembrance for national figures or significant events.
To position the flag at half-mast, first raise it to the top of the pole for a moment before lowering it to the halfway point.
When lowering the flag at the end of the day, it should be raised fully to the top before bringing it down completely.
Always follow official government announcements regarding periods of national mourning.
Flag Etiquette During Sunrise and Sunset:
The Togo flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset whenever possible.
If flown at night, the flag must be illuminated by an appropriate light source to remain visible.
In official or military settings, lowering the flag is often accompanied by a moment of silence or a formal salute.
Weather Conditions:
Avoid flying the flag in severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or storms, as this can damage the fabric.
If the flag is made from all-weather materials, it can be flown in moderate conditions, but it should still be inspected for wear and tear.
Always make sure the flag is dry before storing to prevent mould or damage.
Retirement of the Flag:
When the flag becomes faded, torn, or significantly worn, it should be replaced with a new one.
To retire the flag respectfully, avoid disposing of it as ordinary waste.
The preferred method of disposal is burning it in a dignified manner or cutting it into pieces so it no longer resembles a flag before discarding.
Alternatively, contact local authorities or organisations for official flag retirement ceremonies.
By following these steps, your flag will stay vibrant and well-preserved, allowing you to proudly showcase your national identity for years to come.
